Just recently I did a Google news search using “homeless shelters” and found headlines such as Homeless Shelters Overloaded, Homeless Options Dwindle, Shelters Stretched and Homeless Shelters Bursting at Seams. Why, in a country littered with multi-million dollar facilities constructed in the name of God, are there shelters that must struggle daily to meet the needs of the homeless community? Last year in Pensacola, Florida there was a non-government funded shelter that gained a bit of recognition, the sole reason for which was an instruction to cease and desist operation because of fire and health code violations. To the community’s credit Heavenly Blessings received an outpouring of support, but that doesn’t change the fact that in allowing this situation to come to a head, the Greater Church in Pensacola had seriously overlooked a community of people that their faith commands them to care for. Unfortunately, I’m afraid this scenario is simply par for the course throughout many cities in America.
